ONLY FOR A MOMENT -revisited

On the day of the September 11th attacks I sat down and wrote these words. Ten years ago today we witnessed a major tragedy and injustice. It brought people together. Imagine a country united 365 days a year.

Only For A Moment
9 . 11 . 2001

Only for a moment is the miracle of birth.
Only for a moment, but it exceeds any worth.
Only for a moment is baby's first step.
Only for a moment, but those memories are kept.
Only for a moment is each day of our lives.
Only for a moment, but the moment survives.
Only for a moment on that one tragic day.
Only for a moment, but it won't go away.
Only for a moment for the lives of those lost.
Only for a moment, but so great the cost.
Only for a moment we all band as one.
Only for a moment, then the mourning is done.
Only for a moment will we all sing one song.
Only for a moment, but the moment is gone.
Where will we be after all's said and done?
Where will we be when the battle is won?
Back on the streets in our own separate lives.
Back on the streets where the fittest survives.
If just for a moment the world can unite,
If just for a moment we have the same sight.
Then I cannot complain if just for a day.
That only for a moment the world was this way.
