Station Ten - Jesus Crucified

Jesus is crucified-Tuesday 4/19/11

Luke 23:33-38 ESV
And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. And Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." And they cast lots to divide his garments. And the people stood by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, "He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!" The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine and saying, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!" There was also an inscription over him, "This is the King of the Jews."

Even as Jesus was nailed to the cross He cries out to the Father, “Forgive them for they know not what they do.”  His compassion is first express to the women now to the ones who have subjected Him to physical torment and imminent death.  To the ones that nailed him to the tree it was probably fuel to strip Him even of the tattered rags that remained on him, to ridicule Him and insult him with the offering of a tainted beverage.  Such compassion Jesus shows us not only in His selfless actions of redemption, but also in His forgiveness to the ones that have brought Him tremendous pain.  Oh, to exercise even the smallest measure of His grace and mercy, what a better man I’d be.
