Jesus is laid in the tomb-Saturday 4/23/11
Luke 23:50-56 ESV
Now there was a man named Joseph, from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man, who had not consented to their decision and action; and he was looking for the kingdom of God. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud and laid him in a tomb cut in stone, where no one had ever yet been laid. It was the day of Preparation, and the Sabbath was beginning. The women who had come with him from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how his body was laid. Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments.
What words could comfort a grieving heart? Not even that of the promise of the Lord Himself that he would return in glory. If only they could know that in two days He would be with them again, that He would conquer the bonds of death. Then why would it be so that we look back and remember the events that led up to Jesus’ eternal glory? What is the point of taking ourselves to the place where He lay? Wouldn’t it be much more joyous that we be thankful, move on and embrace the promises of eternity now that death is defeated? May we never forget! We remember these moments to remind ourselves that it is not about us and what we profit, it is in fact about the person in whom we place our faith and our lives, Jesus Christ the Lamb of God.
